JOE

The third film I am going to analyse is ‘Rock n Rolla’

This film starts with a quick pan from left to right to the ‘Warner Brothers’ logo. Instantly the audience know they are watching a big budget film selling to a mass audience. It then draws the ‘dark castle entertainment logo’ onto the wall. It is all in the same tone which gives it a rock effect. During start there are also white little cuts and blobs that appear as if it were a tape, this gives the start of the movie a rough look and sets the scene for the rest of the film. Codes and conventions are instantly used during the first few seconds.

Then the character starts speaking with the camera zooming in on him, Asking questions to the audience. This instantly gets the audience focused on the film. As the camera is zooming in the light in front of the character starts to appear and it gets lighter as he is getting closer to the camera.

The character carries on speaking with a rough voice, this shows hardness of the character (codes and conventions). As the camera really gets closer you see an image of him smoking a bong. He then talks about how a ‘real rock n Rolla’ wants ‘the whole lot’ it then shows very quick clips of him, drinking, having sex and him with guns. As these clips start the music begins with it, this really goes well with the the sex, drink and violence clips.

Then the credits start to appear when they are appearing there is a song in the background, the moving clip of each character is animated but with two colours black and yellow, the lack of colour does create a more serious tone to it. Especially when using black and yellow, near enough opposites. When al of the characters are being introduced, the camera seems to pan in all different directions, as if it was in a magazine.

When the credits are finished it zooms into a character and then changes from animation to normal film again. Then this character starts to speak and talk about himself.

He introduces another character with big significance and power. You can see that he is high in power because he is wearing a suit and is being walked around by security guards.

The character starts talking about previous deals with a house. The estate agents start to tell the camera that it has increased by £4 million since last bought. Then the camera switches angle across London, to different sites e.g. canary wharf, to show the audience where this film is going to be set and where the action/deals is going to happen.

In the rest of the opening scene quick clips are used for each character, which I think is the best way to get across what each character in the team is doing. As the character changes each clip is moved quickly which has a big effect when the camera movement noise is added.
One part shows all of them on the phone, but instead of splitting the camera in half, the camera just moves quickly onto each character.

Towards the end of part 1, you see the investor trying to close a deal with a man at a big football stadium, this just shows the significance of each character and gives a establishing shot for the rest of the film.
