Poker scene analysis

Poker scene analysis

The next stage is for us to storyboard for our teaser trailer. We have decided that one of our scene’s are going to based around a poker game. I feel by analysing a poker scene from a film like, James Bond – Casino Royale, I will get a better idea of how it can be filmed.

First thing we need to get is our props, all characters must be dressed smartly, we must have a table with a green cloth, poker chips and money.

When looking at this scene I was mainly looking at the camera angles. The main camera angles used are: close up shots, over the shoulder shots and pan movements. All these are very effective, the close up shots and over the shoulder shots help distinguish the main features of the scene. There are many zoom in shots on the hand’s and faces where the poker chips are being moved and the face expressions are being shown. There are also many shots which seem to be on the table, which show all the poker chips being moved/betted on. (main event). There are also wide shots showing the whole location in one shot, showing all the main characters and the poker chips.

A good way of the showing the poker player’s hand, is by zooming in on the player then switching to his hand which lifts up the playing cards. The dealer which has all the cards also needs to be shown as a character, the best way of showing his point of view, is by using a point of view shot (POV).

The pan movements are also very effective in this scene, especially where the camera move’s very smoothly from each player showing their card’s, if we could do that in our teaser trailer, it would look very good.

Finally I noticed that the editing and music also create a tense atmosphere during this clip. All the clips are cut tight, moving from each character very quickly. The music used is also very tense which makes the scene much better, as there are high stakes, betting with hundred’s of million.
