JOE

When making an opening sequence to a gangster film you have to look at many different aspects during the research:

Audience feedback
Institution
Analysing films
The MIGRAIN model
The production of the film
The props and camera work used
Technology
The editing stage

The advertising stage

The Institution

The first part of the institution is the making of the films. Firstly you will need to be given a budget by a film company; here is a list of some of the major film production companies:
Fox Entertainment Group
Paramount Motion Pictures Group
Sony Pictures Entertainment
MGM Holdings, Inc.
NBC Universal
Time Warner
Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group

Our film will be filmed and edited by me and Mitchell. As there are only two people in our group the both of us have to take up a lot of the jobs, filming, acting, making of props, directing and editing. We feel our film will fit into the institution because we have found a major demand for British gangster films especially among the male gender. I feel gangster films are much better when it is based on a British storyline and has been produced and edited by British companies. Our film will be a British film, which I feel will help us especially when advertising it in Britain.

Differences between British and American films are: The vocabulary, the prepositions, spelling, speech and they have a different way to life. We prefer the British gangster movies as we feel we can easy relate our opening sequence to our audience.

The average budget for a film is £24,000,000, this is a massive comparison to our budget which is up to £50.

Results from our questionnaire show us that cinema is the most popular medium to watch a film in, when first produced. When we distribute our film I feel it would be a very good idea if we distributed our film to cinema’s first then to sell it on DVD. I feel this would be the easiest and quickest way to make money. Whilst distributing we also need to think how we are going to advertise our film. I think the best way to advertise our film will be either on T.V or on the streets, at bus stops or even on the tubes/trains. I feel this would be the best way because the tubes are used every day by 2.7 million people and T.V is watched everyday by everyone.

The cast in our film is me; Mitchell Allen and Charlie Brown, all of us are media students and therefore have a better understanding of camera angles, lighting and acting.

Our film will have to be age rated and we feel that if we put a 15 + age limit on it, it will gather enough people to watch our film at a reasonable age. Our film does involve a slight piece of violence, not enough to put an 18 age rating on it.

The production company we used were ‘Revolutionary Productions’ we felt this would be the best choice as it is small company which means it would be better to produce our film using this company as we are on a small budget.

Use of MIGRAIN model

Ideology - In our film we will need to focus on the ideology of our opening sequence. When watching a British crime film the audience already get an image of what it might be like. What we want to do is to surprise the audience and therefore the movie can be interesting for both males and females. When a British crime film is made the audience instantly think of guns, violence, sex and drugs. I feel the ideology does play a major part when making an opening sequence for a British crime film because you have to keep it realistic and make the audience interested, it will be very hard to make the film look realistic. When editing I feel we will need to add very good music that goes with the film to make the film seem more serious.

Genre – The genre we chose is adventure/action, but we are focusing on the British crime section as we feel there is a whole in the market for this genre. When focusing on this genre you have to take into account the codes and conventions, which identify the genre. For example the film ‘The Hulk’ which is an action genre can identified by its codes and conventions, violence, weapons, fast speed action, soundtrack, powerfulness and fighting.

Re-Presentation – All media texts are mediated, media texts are re-presentations of reality. There are entirely constructed versions of reality. For example both genders have different biological constructs. For the masculine gender they are seen to be:
Aggressive
Sporty
DIY
Sexual
Greedy
Hard

We will have to take all of these points into consideration as our film will mostly be targeted at males.

Audiences – The audience are the people who consume it, buy it and watch it. The audience we will be targeting at are 15 + males. The media industries control the audience. This is the hypodermic theory- the media injects the audience. There are loads of different audiences, but the main 6 are:

Upper class
Middle class
Lower middle class
Skilled working class
Working class
Lowest subsistence levels.

All of these audiences are normally separated by the: newspapers they read, the T.V channels/shows they watch, the films they watch and the jobs they have. We will try and make our film so it can be watched by all of these audiences. But I feel we will get most our viewings from; working class, skilled working class, lower middle class and a few of middle class.

Narrative – The narrative will differ according to the type of media, the narrative structure for a British crime film would be:

The production company logo’s
The credits
Introductory of characters
Quick clips of each character.
Film name

Props and Camera Work used

To make our film look much more realistic we have to use a variety of camera angles and a number of props. Camera shot sizes, angles and camera movement we are going to use are:

Wide shot’s
Medium shot’s
Close up shot’s
Over the shoulder shot’s
High angle’s
Low angle’s
Eye level shots
Bird’s eye shot’s
Zoom in and out
Pan shot’s

All of these shots make the film seem much more realistic. I feel we are going to use a number of low angle and high angle shot’s. If we are going to make a British crime film, the camera is going to need to look up at the ‘boss’ to let the audience know he is a high powered significant character. I also feel that we are going to use a lot of bird’s eye view shot’s because when we are doing deals we will need to catch the whole of the action, this would be the best way to show this to the audience.

All the prop’s we use will have to be chosen carefully so we don’t go over the 15 age border. Weapons chosen were:

Gun’s
Nun chucks

Other props chosen were:

Bottle of Jack Daniels whisky
Money
Cars
Chairs
Flour – to represent cocaine

All of these prop’s will make our opening sequence seem much more realistic.

Technology – Technology is major part of film production. To film our opening sequence we used a digital camcorder to record our footage and a tri –pod to rest it on. Using a digital camcorder helped us a lot throughout his project. It helped transportation within the camera, if a real film was be filmed a whole cast of people would be used to film it. It has a speaker built in to pick up noises we make during filming. We will also need to use the apple Mac computers to edit the film.

The Editing stage – This is one of the most important stages of the whole project. All of our cut scenes will need to be removed and edited on a software called ‘imovie’. With this piece of software you can change the tone of scenes, we will be using ‘sepia’ and you can add music to the opening sequence. You can also add credits to the film with any noises e.g. gunshots, you can also mix the two cuts together like a fade, to make the opening sequence look much more professional and realistic.

Filming Stage - Whilst filming I found many easy aspects and many hard aspects. I found filming and giving an input to ideas about scenes easy but I felt the acting part was very hard.
